Indian Government Questions Wikipedia’s Role: Biased Content Sparks Legal Battle

The Indian government has issued a notice to Wikipedia, raising concerns about what it calls biased and inaccurate information on its pages. According to reports from PTI, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry questioned why Wikipedia shouldn't be viewed as a “publisher” rather than just a “neutral intermediary,” hinting at possible action against the platform.

The Ministry noted that a small group of editors may hold too much control over Wikipedia’s content, affecting how information on topics and personalities is presented. Known for being a free online encyclopedia where anyone can edit pages, Wikipedia now faces mounting legal cases in India for allegedly posting defamatory and false content.

This notice from the government comes as part of a legal case in the Delhi High Court involving the Indian news agency ANI. The agency claims that certain edits labeled it as “the propaganda tool” of the government, a tag ANI disputes. In court, Justice Subramonium Prasad questioned Wikipedia’s claim of being a neutral encyclopedia while also distancing itself from endorsing any content. “If you’re an intermediary, why be concerned?” he asked, pointing out that biased edits should be removed promptly if they lack proof.

The High Court expressed concerns about Wikipedia’s dual position of claiming neutrality yet disowning responsibility for its content’s accuracy.
