Indian Troops Resume Patrolling in Ladakh After Agreement with China

Indian troops begin patrolling in Ladakh's Demchok after disengagement with China, with Depsang patrols expected soon. Peace efforts continue after years of tension

Indian troops began patrolling the Demchok sector in eastern Ladakh on Friday after a recent agreement with China. According to the Indian Army, patrolling in another area, the Depsang sector, is also expected to begin soon. Both countries had previously agreed to pull back their forces from these points to reduce tensions.

An Army official said on Wednesday that both India and China had successfully withdrawn troops from the two friction points of Demchok and Depsang Plains. On Diwali, Indian and Chinese soldiers even exchanged sweets along the border, including in the eastern Ladakh region.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh later confirmed that the process of disengaging the two countries’ forces near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh was "almost complete."

The LAC is the line that separates Indian and Chinese-held areas from Ladakh in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east. India and China had fought a war over the border in 1962.

Tensions between the two nations increased in July 2020 after a deadly clash killed 20 Indian soldiers and some Chinese troops. This led to a long standoff, with both sides deploying thousands of troops, tanks, and fighter jets in the area.

In October, India and China agreed on a plan to end the standoff. After this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met during the BRICS summit in Russia, marking their first meeting in five years. Rajnath Singh said they hoped to move beyond disengagement, but further progress will take more time.

A Chinese defense spokesperson also confirmed that both sides were working to put the agreement into action. The deal involves pulling back troops from the final two close-contact areas along the border. Most other conflict points were resolved earlier through talks, leading to the creation of buffer zones between the troops. However, the disagreements over Depsang and Demchok lasted until the October agreement.
