India's Batting Worries Before Big Series Against Australia: Experts Question Aging Stars and Missing Runs

India's cricket team faces batting challenges as Kohli and Rohit struggle for form. Experts question the future ahead of the Australia series. Will they perform?

India's batting lineup has been a big talking point as they get ready for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. Former Australian captain Mark Taylor and cricket legend Ian Chappell both expressed their concerns about India's batting strength. Taylor highlighted the recent moves by the BCCI, which dropped experienced players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, leaving only senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to guide the team. He noted that, despite promising young talents, neither Kohli nor Rohit has scored heavily in the last 18 months, which could lead to a tough road ahead for India.

Speaking to Wide World of Sports, Taylor commented, "India has let go of Pujara and Rahane but kept Kohli and Rohit. However, both players haven’t been making big scores recently, putting pressure on the younger players and the lower order."

New batters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan have shown promise, but the team still relies on the experience of Kohli and Rohit. Stats show that Kohli averaged 37.4 and Rohit 33.3 under new selectors, but in 2024, those averages dropped below 30, raising concerns.

Ian Chappell, joining the discussion, shared that while the spotlight is on Rohit and Kohli, their age and the struggles they’ve faced recently could add pressure. He mentioned that the upcoming matches in Australia will be challenging as the pitches there are tougher, especially for aging players.

Chappell stated, "When you reach a certain age, people start wondering if your game is on the decline. That’s the question facing both Kohli and Rohit. Australia’s pitches could really test them if they’re not at their best."

As the series nears, all eyes will be on India's senior players to see if they can rise to the challenge or if India's young talents will have to step up sooner than expected.
