A female student at Tehran’s Islamic Azad University was arrested on Saturday, November 2, 2024, after staging a solo protest by stripping down to her underwear in response to harassment. According to reports, members of the Basij paramilitary force harassed her inside the university, ripping off her headscarf and clothes.
In protest, the woman, who has not been named, sat outside the university in her underwear and then walked in the street, shocking passersby. Under Iran's strict dress code, women must wear a headscarf and loose clothing in public. Videos of the incident were widely shared by various news outlets and human rights groups like Amnesty International.
Footage showed her being taken away by plainclothes officers in a car. Amnesty International demanded her immediate release, saying she should be protected from torture and ill-treatment, and called for investigations into claims of abuse during her arrest.
The Fars news agency, controlled by Iranian authorities, confirmed the incident but claimed the student had worn “inappropriate clothes” in class and stripped after security guards calmly asked her to follow the dress code. They denied any aggressive actions.
The arrest comes in the wake of protests that began in 2022 after Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman, died in police custody for allegedly breaking the dress code. The protests, which saw women removing their headscarves, were eventually quashed after a violent crackdown that resulted in hundreds of deaths.
Iranian actress Katayoun Riahi voiced her support for the student on Instagram, saying, “We must not leave each other to stand alone.” Activist Hossein Ronaghi also praised the student’s courage, calling it a "cry from the heart against the oppression that is suffocating people, especially women."
