Jaishankar Confident on Growing India-US Ties Despite Tight US Election Race Between Trump and Harris
While visiting Australia, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared his optimism about India-US relations, saying the bond will continue to strengthen regardless of the outcome of the US presidential election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. At a press conference with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Jaishankar emphasized that India’s ties with the US have flourished steadily over the last five presidencies, including Trump's first term.
“We’ve witnessed consistent growth in our relationship with the US across five presidencies, including the earlier Trump administration. So, as we watch the American elections, we’re confident our partnership will only strengthen,” he remarked.
Jaishankar also discussed the QUAD alliance, noting its revival under Trump in 2017 and its elevation to ministerial level discussions during the pandemic, which underscored its importance even amidst global travel restrictions.
In the ongoing US elections, Kamala Harris, the Indian-origin Democratic candidate, is running against former President Donald Trump. Harris entered the race after President Joe Biden stepped down due to age concerns. If elected, Harris would make history as the first woman and Indian-origin president of the US.
Trump, meanwhile, is campaigning for a second term, marking his third run as the Republican candidate. He frequently highlighted his rapport with India and Prime Minister Modi, praising Modi as a “great leader” and emphasizing India as an important trade partner. While Trump was vocal about reciprocity on tariffs with India, he consistently lauded Modi’s leadership.
