Jaishankar Slams Canada Over Attack on Hindu Temple in Brampton, Calls Out Political Space for Extremists
In Australia, India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, criticized Canada over recent violent clashes involving pro-Khalistan extremists at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton. During a press briefing with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Canberra, Jaishankar condemned Canada for giving "political space" to extremist elements.
On Sunday, pro-Khalistan supporters reportedly disrupted a consular event at the temple, clashing with the attendees. This incident is the latest in a series of events straining India-Canada relations, with Jaishankar referencing Canada's repeated accusations in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar case, which he called part of a “pattern of unsubstantiated allegations.” Jaishankar also raised concerns over Indian diplomats allegedly being monitored by Canadian authorities, calling this “unacceptable.”
Canada Must Act, Says Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the attack and accused Canadian authorities of failing to protect Indian diplomats. “I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. The Canadian government must act to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Australian Minister Penny Wong Expresses Support Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also voiced concern over the incident, calling it "upsetting" for the Indian community, especially given its timing around Diwali. Wong expressed solidarity with the Indian community and underscored the need to address such targeted incidents.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) echoed these sentiments, urging Canada to prosecute those responsible for the violence and to protect all places of worship within its borders
