Junior doctors at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College protested Friday, demanding a faster and more thorough investigation into the tragic rape and murder of their colleague. Expressing frustration over the slow pace of the CBI's probe, doctors called for new actions to push for justice.
Under the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum, they voiced disappointment with the CBI's initial chargesheet, which names only one suspect, civil volunteer Sanjay Roy. Forum spokesperson Debashis Halder noted that reports suggest more could be involved. “Did the CBI fully examine the role of other suspects, including former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh?” he asked.
Halder announced a series of new rallies. One major rally will take place on November 9, from College Square to Esplanade in Kolkata. Protests will also be organized across West Bengal, with a call to light candles in every locality on November 4 to honor their murdered colleague.
On October 21, junior doctors had paused a hunger strike that began on October 5 after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met with them, promising to consider their demands. However, feeling their calls for justice aren’t being met, they say they are “forced to intensify” the protests.
Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) criticized the renewed agitation. TMC MP Kalyan Bandyopadhyay claimed the protest is now “hijacked” by the CPI(M) party, arguing the ongoing activities cause inconvenience to the public. "What’s the point of protest when the case is already in court?" he questioned.
