India confirmed patrols at Demchok and Depsang, aimed at verifying a recent disengagement agreement with China to reduce border tensions. Meanwhile, an alarming discovery was made on an Air India flight last week, intensifying security concerns in Indian aviation.
On October 27, during a routine cleaning of Air India flight AI916 from Dubai, staff found a live ammunition round in a seat pocket after all passengers had disembarked at Delhi airport. Following strict security protocols, Air India promptly filed a First Information Report (FIR) under the Arms Act, with the Airport Police launching an investigation. "One ammunition cartridge was found in the pocket of a seat of our flight AI916 after it had landed from Dubai at Delhi on October 27," an Air India spokesperson stated, assuring that safety protocols were followed immediately.
This incident comes at a tense time for Indian aviation as several airlines have recently received bomb threats, causing unease and heightened security. Over 510 domestic and international flights have faced bomb threats in the past two weeks, all of which were ultimately confirmed as hoaxes.
In response to this emerging security threat, India’s Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has issued new guidelines for handling such situations. This includes assessing the threat based on factors like the social media account's nature, geopolitical climate, and VIPs on board. Civil aviation authorities will follow these updated procedures, and a Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) will analyze each threat and determine whether it is serious or non-specific.
The discovery of live ammunition on an Air India flight and the ongoing wave of hoax bomb threats emphasize the importance of vigilance and security in India’s aviation sector.
