Punjab Kings Retain Just Two Players, Coach Ricky Ponting Aims to Build a New-Look Team with Fresh Strategy
On Thursday, IPL teams revealed their player retention lists, and Punjab Kings made a bold move, retaining only Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh. Notably, they released top players such as South African pacer Kagiso Rabada, Indian bowler Arshdeep Singh, and England’s all-rounder Sam Curran. This strategy leaves PBKS with a significant budget for the upcoming auction.
Ricky Ponting, recently appointed as the head coach for PBKS, expressed his excitement for this "fresh start" in an interview with The ICC Review. “It’s a new chapter starting with today’s retention list. I have big plans for Punjab Kings,” Ponting shared.
PBKS enters the auction with the largest budget of any team, giving them the power to craft a squad from scratch. Ponting shared his vision of making PBKS “the most dynamic and entertaining” team in the league. The team has also brought in new coaching staff, which Ponting believes will add fresh energy to the franchise.
Ponting also shared his thoughts on surprising releases from other franchises, particularly Indian stars like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer. “There are some big names available for the auction. I didn’t expect players like Shreyas and Pant to be released,” Ponting noted.
With their new head coach and a fresh approach, PBKS looks set to make a bold impression in the upcoming IPL season.
