On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an important change to Russia’s nuclear policy while the fight in Ukraine continues. This new policy means that Russia can now use nuclear weapons more easily if it feels threatened, which is a warning to the US and other Western countries.
Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said these changes were necessary to match the current situation and called it a very important document that other countries should pay attention to.
The announcement of this updated nuclear policy happened right after the US gave Ukraine permission to use long-range missiles to hit Russian targets. This move had already worried Putin, who warned the West not to help Ukraine strike against Russia.
So, what does this updated nuclear policy say? It states that if a non-nuclear country, especially one backed by a nuclear country, attacks Russia, it will be seen as a coordinated attack. In response, Russia has the right to hit back with nuclear weapons. The policy also allows Russia to use nuclear weapons if it faces a major attack, even from conventional weapons like drones.
Peskov emphasized that aggression from a non-nuclear state, with help from a nuclear country, will be viewed as a joint attack, making it clear who Russia sees as an enemy – referring to Ukraine and its Western supporters.
This change follows Putin's recent talks about needing to adjust the nuclear doctrine because of fears from allied nations. He also warned the US and European allies that allowing Ukraine to use advanced weapons to strike deep into Russia could lead to a dangerous escalation and possibly a direct conflict
