The political office of Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, in Doha, Qatar, is still open, according to Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari. This statement comes after reports that the U.S. asked Qatar to send Hamas away. Al-Ansari explained that when there’s no peace talks, the office doesn’t do much.
He added that any news about closing the office would come directly from Qatar, not through rumors.
Qatar has been trying to help the U.S. and Egypt settle the Israel-Hamas conflict for a while now, but talks haven’t worked out. Al-Ansari noted that the Hamas leaders involved in discussions are not currently in Doha, as they travel to different places.
Earlier this month, Qatar told both Hamas and Israel that it would pause its efforts to mediate a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages unless they show a real willingness to talk again.
