Supreme Court Dismisses Jan Suraaj's Plea to Reschedule Bihar By-Elections Citing Chhath Puja

In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court declined a plea from the political party Jan Suraaj to reschedule the upcoming by-elections in Bihar, citing the Chhath Puja festival. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan ruled against the request, stating it was too late to make any changes as all arrangements were already in place for the elections.

The court admonished Jan Suraaj, pointing out that no other political parties had raised objections to the polling dates. "Only you have a problem," the judges told the party, underscoring their point by advising the new political entity to familiarize itself with how the political process works.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the petitioner, argued that the Election Commission had previously adjusted polling dates in states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Kerala due to religious events. He highlighted that Bihar’s Chhath Puja, a significant festival, should have warranted similar considerations. Despite the argument, the court held firm on its decision.

The by-elections in Bihar will proceed on schedule, with voting set for the Ramgarh, Tarari, Belaganj, and Imamganj assembly seats. Vote counting will take place on November 23. Jan Suraaj, in its debut electoral contest, has nominated candidates across all four constituencies: Sushil Kushwaha in Ramgarh, Kiran Singh in Tarari, Mohammad Amjad in Belaganj, and Jitendra Paswan in Imamganj. Initially, the party had considered Lieutenant General (retd.) Sri Krishna Singh for Tarari and Khilafat Hussain for Belaganj.
