On Friday, three men linked to the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were arrested for their role in a recent grenade attack in Srinagar, reported PTI. This attack, which took place on Sunday, was aimed at security forces but injured 12 civilians instead.
The arrested men are Usama Yasin Sheikh, Umar Fayaz Sheikh, and Afnan Mansoor Sheikh, all from Srinagar’s Ikhrajpora area. Inspector General of Police for Kashmir, V K Birdi, confirmed that the case has been solved with these arrests. He also mentioned that the attack was planned by terror groups based in Pakistan, who wanted to disrupt the peace in the region.
Grenade Attack Details
During the attack, grenades were thrown from a flyover at a busy flea market where security forces were stationed. One grenade exploded near a paramilitary vehicle, causing injuries to 12 civilians in the area.
Recent Wave of Violence in J&K
The attack adds to a series of recent terror incidents in Jammu and Kashmir. These incidents have been increasing since the new government was sworn in on October 16, marking the region's first elected government since the 2019 repeal of Article 370.
Official Responses
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha directed security forces to act firmly against terrorism, stating, “You have full freedom to crush terror groups and leave no stone unturned to complete this mission.” Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also condemned the attack, calling it a conspiracy to disturb the peace. He noted that the violence seems to have escalated since the new government took charge. “This shows that militancy is still present in the valley,” Abdullah said, urging the central government to take strong action.
