Train Derailment Investigation Reveals Station Master and Keyman Failed to Act on Track Defect, Citing Lack of Training
An investigation into the derailment of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express near Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, has uncovered that the Station Master and keyman failed to act promptly despite identifying a serious track defect. This failure has been attributed to their lack of proper training, experience, and confidence.
The tragic incident on July 18, 2024, resulted in the deaths of four passengers and injuries to 20 others when Train No. 15904 derailed between Motiganj and Jhilahi stations in North Eastern Railway’s Lucknow Division. Initial suspicions pointed to possible sabotage, as the loco pilots reported hearing an explosion before the derailment.
However, the final report by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) of the North-Eastern Circle revealed that the derailment occurred because the Station Master of Motiganj and the keyman did not take timely action after identifying the track issue. The CRS emphasized that better training is required for all personnel to prevent such lapses.
In response to the recommendations, the Railway Board has directed all Zonal Railways to ensure that sectional officers and staff involved in the maintenance of safety-critical assets—such as tracks, rolling stock, signaling systems, and overhead electrification—are properly trained and dedicated to the upkeep of these systems. The communication stressed the importance of training staff to recognize signs of safety failures and conduct root cause analyses.
