The warm relationship between US President-elect Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been widely noticed, often described as a “bromance.” With Trump returning to the White House, many expect the India-US bond to grow even stronger, thanks to both leaders’ close personal rapport.
During Trump’s first term from 2016 to 2020, India and the US celebrated two major events: "Howdy Modi" in Houston and "Namaste Trump" in Gujarat, drawing tens of thousands of supporters. These gatherings, filled with handshakes, hugs, and shared words of appreciation, symbolized a growing friendship that also strengthened political ties between the two nations.
After Trump’s election win, Modi was among the first world leaders to congratulate him, reflecting their close connection. In his message, Modi mentioned fond memories of their past events, and Trump, in return, has often praised Modi as a “great friend,” “fantastic man,” and “nicest human being.” The two leaders have continued this mutual admiration over the years, speaking highly of each other’s achievements and leadership styles.
In one of his campaign interviews, Trump praised Modi's leadership, mentioning India’s stability and growth under Modi’s administration. “He’s a friend of mine,” Trump said, recalling their powerful “Howdy, Modi” event in Houston, which attracted around 80,000 attendees. Even when Trump has occasionally criticized India on issues like trade tariffs, he’s been careful to show respect for Modi, repeatedly calling him a “great leader.”
Modi has also shared positive experiences with Trump, including a 2019 election campaign moment where he described spending nine hours with Trump during his first visit to the White House. Modi recounted Trump’s knowledge of American history and the warm welcome he received, adding that his relationship with Trump feels “like family.” Modi’s affection for Trump was also evident when he welcomed Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, to India.
With Trump’s return, both leaders are expected to continue their friendly dynamic, which could be beneficial for India-US relations in the coming years. Many analysts believe that the bond between these leaders will help India and the US work closely on shared interests and further strengthen their strategic alliance
