Union Minister Kiren Rijiju Celebrates Diwali with Soldiers at India-China Border, Chats with Chinese Troops

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju celebrates Diwali with Indian soldiers near China border, interacts with PLA troops; talks border peace and India-China ties.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju visited an Indian Army post near Tawang on Friday to celebrate Diwali with the troops stationed along the challenging India-China border. During his visit, Rijiju briefly spoke with three soldiers from China’s People's Liberation Army (PLA) through an interpreter, engaging in a unique and friendly interaction.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Rijiju asked the Chinese soldiers how they were managing in the high-altitude area, 15,000 feet above sea level. The PLA soldiers shared that they felt comfortable and had no difficulties serving in such terrain. Rijiju noted, “After speaking with Chinese soldiers and observing their facilities, everyone can feel proud of India’s border development.”

Hailing from Arunachal Pradesh himself, Rijiju shared a warm Diwali with Indian troops, mentioning that he and his team chose to spend the festival away from their homes to be with the jawans. “Since you are far from home for Diwali, we decided to be here and celebrate with you,” Rijiju said to the soldiers.

India-China Border Situation Update
The friendly interaction came shortly after India reached an agreement with China for better patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, aiming to ease the ongoing military tension. Recently, Indian and Chinese soldiers exchanged Diwali sweets at multiple points along the LAC in a show of goodwill.

The relations between India and China became strained in April 2020 after Chinese troops increased activity along the LAC, resulting in several confrontations. A major incident occurred on June 15, 2020, in Galwan Valley, leading to the death of 20 Indian soldiers.
