The Uttar Pradesh State Women Commission has suggested new steps to make public spaces safer for women. These ideas include:
- Banning male tailors from measuring women for clothes.
- Ensuring that only female trainers teach women in gyms and yoga classes.
- Hiring female staff in women’s clothing stores and placing female guards on school buses.
These ideas were discussed in a recent meeting in Lucknow. Although the ideas are still being considered, the commission is working on turning them into rules that can be enforced across the state. Maneesha Ahlawat, a commission member, said these steps are in the early stages and will be sent to the government if approved.
In Shamli, some of these measures are already being implemented. Hamid Hussain, a local district officer, has asked gyms, yoga centers, and women’s training centers to hire female trainers and install CCTV cameras for added safety.
Other key changes in Shamli include:
- Female guards on school buses.
- CCTV cameras in boutiques where women get fitted for clothes.
- All coaching centers to have CCTV cameras and proper restroom facilities for female students.
- Women’s clothing stores are encouraged to hire female staff for customer support.
Veena Agrawal, a local social worker, said these changes will help make places safer and more comfortable for women.
What’s Happening in Haryana?
To boost women’s safety, Haryana police recently added a new feature to the state's Emergency Response Support System. Now, women traveling alone can share their live location with police on WhatsApp, allowing for real-time tracking. This feature, reviewed by DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, is especially for women traveling at night to give them more protection.
