Violent Incident Outside Brampton Temple Raises Concerns Among Indian Community in Canada
On Monday, the High Commission of India in Ottawa voiced strong concerns over a violent incident that happened outside a consular camp at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, near Toronto. According to the High Commission, supporters of the Khalistani movement disrupted a peaceful event intended to provide essential services to the Indian community. This disruption has sparked outrage and calls for stronger action.

In its statement, the High Commission said, “Anti-India groups violently disrupted a consular camp organized with the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton.” The camp was set up to help Indians get consular services, such as official life certificates, and was planned with local partners. Despite these disruptions, the Consulate was able to serve over 1,000 Indian and Canadian citizens.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the violence, calling it “unacceptable.” He expressed support for religious freedom and thanked the police for quickly responding to the incident. Trudeau posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “The acts of violence at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton today are unacceptable. Every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely.”

Police in Brampton’s Peel Region deployed many officers to control the scene. Although no arrests were made, videos circulated online showing clashes between groups carrying Khalistan and Indian flags, with reports of fistfights and people with sticks.

Chandra Arya, a Canadian Member of Parliament, also criticized the incident, blaming pro-Khalistani extremists. He described it as a serious issue and warned that such extremism could be influencing Canadian politics and law enforcement. Arya said, “A red line has been crossed by Canadian Khalistani extremists today. Hindu-Canadians need to speak up for their rights and ensure their safety.”

The Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwara Council (OSGC) also condemned the violence, stressing the need for a “thorough investigation.” They called for more understanding and respect within the community and assured support for all members, regardless of beliefs.

Additionally, the Hindu Canadian Foundation reported that women and children were affected during the disturbance, adding to the growing concerns of the Indian diaspora in Canada. This latest incident adds tension to the already strained relations between India and Canada, especially after Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau recently accused India of involvement in the 2023 killing of a Khalistani separatist in Vancouver.

In the past year, similar incidents have targeted Hindu places of worship in Canada. For instance, a Hindu temple in Windsor was vandalized with anti-India graffiti, and others have faced similar attacks in Mississauga and Brampton. Both Indian and Canadian leaders have condemned these incidents, calling for better protection for the Indian community.
