West Bengal Faces Outrage Over Spike in Sexual Assaults; Governor Urges Collective Action

In light of a disturbing rise in sexual assault cases across West Bengal, Governor C.V. Ananda Bose expressed deep concern on Sunday, November 3, 2024, urging all parts of society to unite against these heinous crimes. "Serious injustice is being done to the women of West Bengal. It's time for all stakeholders—the government, NGOs, political parties, the media, and the silent majority—to come together and ensure the rights and safety of women," Governor Bose said.

To empower women, the Governor announced the introduction of a new self-defense technique, ‘Kala-te,’ which combines martial arts like Kalaripayattu and Karate. This initiative aims to teach self-defense to women in the state.

Meanwhile, incidents of sexual violence continue to send shockwaves. On Sunday, a Class X student in North 24 Parganas was sexually assaulted, and police quickly arrested the accused. Additionally, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited the family of a minor who was raped and murdered in Falakata. He criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government, urging them to "proactively stop sexual predators" and highlighting irregularities in post-mortem procedures that could affect the trial.

Trinamool Congress leaders are also speaking out. MLA Manoranjan Byapari, a known advocate for women's rights, expressed frustration over the recent incidents, asking, "Has West Bengal become a playground for rapists and murderers? How are they getting the courage to act like this?"

The alarming trend has included several incidents in different parts of the state, from the brutal assault on a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata to violent crimes against young girls in rural areas like Joynagar, Farakka, and Domkal. Protests have erupted, with citizens demanding strict punishment for the offenders.
