Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha was close to retiring from cricket when he made a quiet visit to Eden Gardens in June. After two years of playing for Tripura, Saha had almost decided to step away from the game. However, a conversation with former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, along with support from his wife, renewed his desire to play again—this time, to finish his career with Bengal, the state where his cricket journey began.
In a candid interview, Saha shared, "I wasn’t planning to play this year, but Sourav Ganguly and my wife convinced me to give it one last shot with Bengal." Saha’s deep connection with his home state played a big part in his decision. Ganguly’s encouragement made him feel that ending his career with Bengal would be a fitting tribute to the place that shaped his game.
Though he has agreed to return, Saha clarified that he will only be part of the Ranji Trophy and will skip white-ball matches. He also informed his IPL team, Gujarat Titans, that he won’t be playing in the league this season. "Given my physical condition and injuries, I’ll only focus on red-ball cricket for Bengal," he said. If Bengal qualifies for the finals, Saha plans to see the season through, but if not, his journey will end at Eden Gardens.
Saha’s stint with Tripura gave young wicketkeepers like Abishek Porel the chance to grow. Reflecting on his mentorship, he said, "I’ve always been happy to help young players. Whether it’s in the IPL or elsewhere, players like Dhruv Jurel and Rishabh Pant have come to me for advice." Saha cherishes these moments of guiding younger players, which he says keeps his passion alive.
Back in 2021, India coach Rahul Dravid had informed Saha that he was no longer part of the national team’s plans. Despite the news, Saha didn’t lose his love for the game. "I started playing cricket because I loved it. Last year, I felt like that love was fading. But after this season, I’m ready to move on."
As Saha prepares for his final chapter in domestic cricket, he hopes to lead Bengal to the Ranji Trophy finals, a high note on which he would be proud to end his career.
