Diljit Dosanjh’s New Year’s Concert Draws Controversy Over Alcohol Songs

Diljit Dosanjh, a famous singer and actor, was set to perform a big New Year’s Eve concert in Ludhiana. But things took a turn when a complaint was filed by Punditrao Dharenavar, an assistant professor from Chandigarh. The complaint says that Diljit has ignored warnings not to sing certain songs that are seen as controversial.

The local Women and Child Department in Punjab issued a notice to Ludhiana’s District Commissioner, asking them to stop Diljit from singing specific songs during his concert on December 31, 2024. The songs in question are known for talking about alcohol, with titles like “Patiala Pegg,” “5 Tara Theke,” and “Case (Jeeb Vicho Feem Labbiya).” Even if Diljit changes some lyrics, the complaints want these songs banned because they can influence young viewers, especially children.

Dharenavar mentioned that a 2019 ruling from the Punjab and Haryana High Court stated that songs promoting alcohol, drugs, or violence shouldn’t be played at public events. He is considering taking his complaint to the High Court if Diljit performs these songs.

Moreover, Dharenavar criticized Diljit for wearing a traditional pagadi, saying it shouldn’t be linked to bad values.

The Ludhiana concert was a last-minute addition to Diljit’s tour and was packed with fans. The tour, called “Dil-Luminati India Tour,” has faced similar issues in other cities, such as Hyderabad and Indore, where people complained about his songs promoting alcohol and violence.

Despite facing these troubles, Diljit’s tour has been very successful, with tickets selling out quickly. Earlier this year, Diljit even said he would stop singing about alcohol if the government banned it nationwide.
