Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ Opens Big Despite Controversy

Kangana Ranaut’s new movie, “Emergency,” which she directed herself, hit theaters this Friday. Even though the film started off slowly at the box office, it still marked Kangana’s best opening in five years since the pandemic began.

On its first day, “Emergency” made ₹2.35 crore. To put that in perspective, her previous movie, “Tejas,” earned just ₹1.25 crore when it opened, and “Dhaakad” made ₹1.20 crore on its first day. The biggest opening for her before “Emergency” was with the sports drama “Panga,” which brought in ₹2.70 crore back in January 2020.

“Emergency” is a political drama where Kangana plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film talks about the Emergency period in India from 1975 to 1977. However, it has faced a lot of criticism. Some people believe that the movie does not accurately portray the Sikh community. Last August, a group called Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) sent a legal notice to the movie makers, asking them to change parts of the film that they felt were offensive. The SGPC also asked for a ban on the movie, and many cinemas in cities like Ludhiana and Amritsar chose not to show it because of protests.

Kangana responded to this by saying that the call for a ban and restricted screenings in some areas of Punjab was unfair to both the movie and the artists involved.
